What Happens During the First 24 to 72 Hours of Detox
Detox is the physical withdrawal phase that occurs when a person stops using alcohol or drugs. The first 24 to 72 hours can involve physical and emotional symptoms, but the timing and severity differ depending on the substance, pattern of use, general health and whether more than one substance is involved. Some withdrawal symptoms can be medically serious, which is why attempting detox alone may be unsafe.
On arrival, the client is helped to settle into their private room and provide any required information about recent substance use, prescribed medication and current symptoms. Personal belongings and medications may be reviewed according to the residence’s safety procedures. The immediate priority is to understand how the client is presenting and what level of monitoring or medical input may be appropriate.
During the early stabilisation period, staff may monitor factors such as alertness, physical discomfort, anxiety, sleep, hydration and changes in symptoms. Where medically appropriate, withdrawal support may be provided in accordance with the client’s assessed needs. Treatment decisions depend on the individual, and the admissions or clinical team should be consulted about what care can be safely offered.
The first one to three days may also involve significant fatigue, disrupted sleep, irritability, nausea, sweating, headaches, restlessness or strong cravings. These symptoms are not identical for every client. The residential setting provides structure, observation and support so changes can be recognised rather than leaving the person to manage distress alone behind a closed bedroom door at home.
Counselling during the earliest stage is paced according to the client’s physical condition. The initial focus may be on reassurance, orientation and helping the person remain engaged with the process. As they become more physically stable, daily one-on-one counselling can begin addressing the emotional, psychological and behavioural factors connected to their substance use.
Detox is only the beginning of recovery. Once the client is physically stable, rehabilitation focuses on issues such as burnout, anxiety, family strain, workplace pressure, relapse triggers and healthier ways of coping. A tailored recovery plan helps connect the immediate withdrawal phase with longer-term behavioural change.
