The Psychological

Chronic or abusive use of drugs and alcohol changes the way that the chemicals in the brain operate, leading to imbalances.

These chemical imbalances can manifest in depression, paranoia, obsessive thinking, anxiety and psychosis.

Self worth, decision making and views of the world can become distorted. During your detox and rehab process at Sydney Detox and Rehab we will be supporting you to examine and reorientate your mindset, thinking patterns and sense of self to better work for you. We endeavour to teach you skills such as mindfulness, inquiry and meditation. We support you to understand your patterns and habits & help you to both start to shift the patterns & habits that don’t serve you and develop new habits that do serve you. It can take time for entrenched patterns to shift and for chemical imbalances in the brain to change, but supports such as counselling, exercise, mindfulness and yoga can get you off to the right start.

The Social

Isolation, disconnection from others and relational conflicts are common consequences of addiction.

When life centres around using substances, your interest in and capacity to engage with others becomes affected.

Some people start to only spend time with other users. Shame and secrecy are common experiences for addicts, this can create anxiety and feelings of inauthenticity. At Sydney Detox and Rehab we look at various aspects of the social domain. We support clients with understanding healthy boundaries, tools for conflict and how to recognise & communicate needs. For some clients it is important to reevaluate their social circles and look at alternative ways of spending time with people that don’t involve using or drinking.

For other clients, we need to focus on reparation of relationships- acknowledging how addiction has impacted our relationships and how we can go about rebuilding trust & connection. If necessary we can recommend supports that your loved ones can access.

There is always someone to talk to at Sydney Detox and Rehab. Our team are nonjudgmental and enjoy engaging with clients; be it going for a kayak, chatting about world cuisines, going for a walk, or simply enjoying a cup of tea with one of our friendly counsellors.

The Emotional

Addiction can often be a way of trying to numb emotional states that are challenging.

This can be anxiety/fear, sadness, grief, anger, disappointment and a host of other emotions.

However, addiction ultimately tends to exacerbate these emotional states for a variety of reasons: drugs and alcohol create chemical imbalances in the brain that lead to states like depression, paranoia & anxiety; addiction & its consequences tends to undermine self-worth; and suppression of emotions normally just creates a build up of unresolved tension & emotion.

Emotions and feelings are important human experiences that give us information about ourselves, our situation and our needs. For example, we might feel angry when someone oversteps a boundary or sad when we lose something. It is useful for clients to learn how to approach, process and express emotions in a healthy way.

Developing a healthy relationship to our feelings and the feelings of others takes time. If you have become used to numbing your emotions, feeling again can be overwhelming, this is why we take a gentle approach to working with emotions, so that you can learn to regulate your emotions and feel safe.

The emotional domain is supported at Sydney Detox and Rehab with:

The Spiritual

The spiritual is another important dimension of a person and can mean different things for different people.

It can include: our sense of purpose & belonging, joy & celebration, connection to something greater than ourselves, reason for living, authentic self, knowing we are loved unconditionally, acceptance and connection to a sense of magic or mystery.

Addiction can take away or diminish all of these- when you rely on alcohol and drugs there is little room for anything in life except the cycles of addiction. A person’s reason for living can often shift to using, which can undermine connection to self and the world. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety and dread. Whilst the spiritual may not feel important to everyone, Sydney Detox and Rehab offers clients the space to connect with and explore questions around purpose, meaning, connection and love.

If you have ever wondered about the meaning of life, have questions like:

Why am here? What am I supposed to do with my life? What is my purpose? What is my connection with a higher power?
We can help at Sydney Detox and Rehab. We provide coaching and tools for you to find meaning and purpose. Sometimes it’s about knowledge and culture.

Sydney Rehab and Detox supports the spiritual domain with:

Sound meditation
A retreat-like, relaxed environment
Reconnection exercises
Providing a non-judgmental space to have conversations around these topics.
Nature walks
Linking up with appropriate groups
Relaxed breathing exercise
