The Difference Between Resting and Recovering
A few days at a wellness retreat may help someone feel calmer, but rest alone does not address dependence. If alcohol or drug use has become difficult to control, the person may need support with withdrawal, cravings, mental health symptoms, behaviour patterns and relapse risk. These issues require more than a comfortable room and a break from work.
Detox is the first physical stage. It focuses on helping the body adjust when alcohol or drugs are stopped. The symptoms and risks depend on the substance, length of use, amount used, general health and whether other medications are involved. Because some forms of withdrawal can be serious, the admissions or clinical team should assess whether residential detox is appropriate through confidential admission.
Rehabilitation begins once the client is physically stable enough to engage more fully. This stage looks at the reasons behind substance use and the situations that keep it going. For an Eastern Suburbs client, that may include work pressure, social drinking, perfectionism, relationship conflict, anxiety, disrupted sleep or the need to remain constantly available.
Daily one-on-one counselling helps the client identify personal triggers and develop more reliable ways of coping. Treatment may also include mental health support, holistic therapies, relapse-prevention planning and aftercare preparation. The aim is not simply to remove the substance for a few days, but to help the person return home with a clearer plan.
The longer your rehab stay, the better the opportunity to practise new habits and prepare for the situations that may arise after treatment. Flexible stays can be discussed with the admissions team based on the client’s needs, suitability and progress.
