Hallucinogenic drugs and their impacts are a significant concern for many individuals. Reaching out for support is a courageous step. It can feel confronting to acknowledge that you have an issue with drugs and addiction, but getting the right support can make a world of difference. Here at Sydney Detox and Rehab, we are here to help you every step of the way in your journey from addiction to wellness.

What are hallucinogens?

Hallucinogens are psychoactive drugs that significantly alter the user’s perception of reality and consciousness. They can cause hallucinations, visions, delirium, out of body experiences and dissociation. Hallucinogens include LSD, DMT, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), mescaline, PCP and dextromethorphan (DXM). Whilst some hallucinogens such as DMT and psilocybin have been researched for their medicinal effects, they all have potential for abuse.

Are hallucinogens addictive?

Most hallucinogens are considered to be psychologically addictive rather than physiologically addictive. Over time users will develop tolerance for the drug and need to take more and more to get the same effect. Psychological addiction can occur when users get hooked on wanting to re-experience the altered states that these substances produce. Individuals may come to rely on the drug as an escape from their everyday reality or difficulties in their life. Regular and increased use of these substances can have serious long term consequences, including onset of schizophrenia, depression, financial difficulties and suicidal ideation.

Signs you may have a problem with hallucinogens:

  • Regularly using more than you intend to
  • Failing to carry out obligations at home, in relationships or at work due to use
  • Risky behaviour, for example driving while under the influence of the drug
  • Needing to use more and more of the drug to get an effect
  • Relationship tensions, especially around drug use
  • Sensory distortions
  • Continuing to use despite negative consequences on your life
  • Memory loss
  • Impaired motor skills
  • Mood swings
  • Health issues such as blurred vision, analgesia and seizures
  • Losing touch with reality
  • Feelings of detachment and dissociation
  • Lack of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Depression and suicidal tendencies

Hallucinogens and withdrawal

Continued use of hallucinogens can alter and damage the brain’s cell receptor sites. Eventually these cell receptor sites may not be able to regulate the brain and body in the normal way. As tolerance and damage to these sites increases, so does the potential for uncomfortable symptoms occurring when the drug is stopped. These symptoms are known as withdrawal symptoms and can include:

  • Flashbacks
  • Diarrhoea
  • Chills and sweats
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Tremors
  • Increased heart rate
  • Aggression, violence and feelings of rage
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Lack of motivation
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder

The severity of symptoms will depend which hallucinogen(s) was abused, the duration & severity of the drug abuse and whether other drugs or alcohol were also abused.
Residential detox and rehab is recommended to safely support the process of detoxing from the drug(s) being used and start building tools to lead a life free from substance misuse.

Hallucinogen addiction treatment

The abuse of hallucinogens such as LSD, DMT, psilocybin, mescaline, PCP and DXM can have significant long term consequence on physical and mental wellbeing, including psychosis, inability to navigate regular reality, memory loss and heart failure.
It is important to know that help is available and that the right support from experienced professionals can dramatically increase your chances of recovery.
